Growing interest in explosives technology among both federal investigators and military personnel is prompting Missouri University of Science and Technology to further expand its graduate programs in the field. The University of Missouri System Board of Curators on Thursday voted to approve a new master of science degree in explosives technology at Missouri S&T. The proposal now awaits final approval by the state Coordinating Board of Higher Education.

A Missouri S&T professor known for both his teaching acumen and research portfolio has been named an ASM International fellow, a top honor in materials science and engineering. Dr. David Van Aken, a Curators’ Distinguished Teaching Professor of metallurgical engineering, is one of 18 inductees in the professional society’s 2017 class of fellows. The new members will be formally recognized at an Oct. 10 awards dinner in conjunction with the Materials Science & Technology 2017 annual conference in Pittsburgh.

Former engineering management chair Henry Sineath dies

Dr. Henry Howard Sineath, professor emeritus of engineering management at Missouri University of Science and Technology, died on Oct. 8. He was 95. Sineath, known to friends and colleagues alike as “Dr. Si,” joined the university in 1976 as a visiting professor of engineering management after a 25-year career in industry. He established the school’s packaging program the following year and also served as its second chair of engineering management, succeeding program founder Dr. Bernard Sarchet.

Missouri S&T geologist named AAAS Fellow

Dr. Francisca Oboh-Ikuenobe of Missouri University of Science and Technology has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for her contributions to the advancement of palynology ─ the study of organic-walled microfossils such as pollen and spores ─ and her outstanding efforts in educating the next generation of Earth scientists. This year’s nearly 400 AAAS fellows will be formally announced in the AAAS News & Notes section of the journal Science on November 24. New fellows will be also be recognized during the organization’s 2018 annual meeting in Austin, Texas, in February.

Missouri S&T to participate in $9.7M oil, gas exploration project in southeastern U.S.

A Missouri University of Science and Technology geologist is part of a four-campus research team that will receive nearly $10 million from the U.S. Department of Energy and several energy companies in a bid to boost unconventional oil and gas recovery in the interior southeastern United States. The project is part of a $30 million investment by the federal agency’s Office of Fossil Energy to boost production in reservoirs with less than 50,000 barrels per day of current production.

The Experimental Mine at Missouri S&T is known to many as the site of a popular summer Explosives Camp for high school students, and for its designation by Popular Science magazine as the country’s “coolest lab.” For Dr. Catherine Johnson, assistant professor of explosives engineering, the Missouri S&T mine is also an invaluable testing ground to study a life-altering ailment that can impact athletes, car accident victims, members of the military and others: traumatic brain injury (TBI). In partnership with neuroscientists from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and researchers with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the native Briton uses the outdoor lab to mimic battlefield conditions and explore how carefully calibrated explosions affect the brain’s wiring.

A National Academy of Engineering member known for her work to highlight statistical rigor and mathematical probability in infrastructure design and risk management will present the 2018 Stueck Lecture at Missouri S&T later this month. Dr. Suzanne Lacasse, technical director of the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute and a member of the national engineering academies in the U.S., Canada, Norway and France, will discuss “Reality-based design for robust geotechnical practice” at 2:30 p.m., Friday, April 20, in Room 125 of Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Hall, 1401 N. Pine St. Lacasse plans to illustrate probabilistic and reliability-based design methods with case studies involving dam design, landslide runout, foundations of a historical ship museum and offshore installations.
